High School Opening This Year in Ethiopia

A high school now stands on our campus in Ethiopia.

Only the finishing touches remain before construction is complete. As soon as the tiles are laid, and the walls are painted, our team will have the space needed to provide quality education to students from preschool through 12th grade.

Zebdeos, a ministry leader shares—

“I am so excited to see the high school opening for the coming school year.”

Especially at a time when Ethiopia is faced with unrest, high levels of uncertainty, and rising inflation, school helps give vulnerable children the stability, hope, and community they desperately need.

According to a 2022 UNICEF report, in the region where we serve in Ethiopia, less than 20% of high-school-aged children attend high school, and only 3% of students make it to 11th and 12th grade. That’s why, after years of planning and with your support, our team in Ethiopia has built a high school to reach 600 students each year with holistic, Gospel-centered education.

Orphaned and vulnerable children like Yosef and Banchirga will complete their secondary education in a setting where teachers care, where classes sizes are small, and where the hope of the Gospel is woven into their curriculum and extracurricular activities.

As Banchirga shares—

“Lifesong, for me, is like my school and my home.”

To further support the children we serve, our team in Ethiopia is expanding the dining hall and adding an office building.

At Lifesong, we stand by a 4-part pledge to the children we serve. The third part of the pledge affirms our commitment to providing quality education to orphaned and vulnerable children to provide a foundation for their future.

“Our Children” Will:

Be taught the Gospel and how to live as a follower of Jesus Christ

Not want for food, clothing, medical care, or shelter

Receive a quality education to provide a foundation for their future

Experience continued love and support while transitioning into adult living

Students at our school are performing exceptionally well academically.

This year, 100% of sixth-grade students and 100% of eighth-grade students passed their regional exams, compared with only 82% of sixth-graders and 73% of eighth-graders across the country.

School is also a place where the children we serve are learning to serve their neighbors.

Together, our team raised money to purchase food for 175 of the most vulnerable families in their community. When students are sent home at the end of the year, many families can’t afford to feed themselves and their children. But this year, families in need received cooking ingredients so they could have enough to eat.

Bags of corn and oil were distributed to families in need.

As a Lifesong team member beautifully shares—

“Where we serve in Ethiopia, there’s a hill you can hike up and look down over the town. As the sun shines down, the roof of our school lights up. Jesus, through his people, is shining in a dark place as children come to know Jesus.”

God’s work, your work, and our team’s work all connect to make that happen.
