Bringing Home Twins: A Haiti Adoption Story

Dear Lifesong,
When we brought twin 3-year-old boys home from Haiti in October 2022, we had been waiting and praying for them for over 7 years. Even though we had prepared as best we could, it’s hard to even explain how drastically our children have changed our family!
Yes, it has been hard in so many ways—they are loud and and impulsive and so full of energy; having TWO somehow exponentially increases the crazy in our house! Our older biological children were almost 11, 13, and 16 at the time of their arrival from Haiti, so to go back to the toddler stage was difficult as well.
I’d like to say I joyfully sacrificed the time, order, and control I once had, but there were many days when I longed for the relatively easy life we previously enjoyed.
And yet,
we all agree that adding the twins to our family has been one of the best things that has ever happened to us. We had braced ourselves for attachment issues, but the twins seemed to recognize us quickly as their safe place and embraced us as their family.
They have brought us so much joy and SO much laughter every day. They truly are the most hilarious people we know. Our older kids have rallied around the challenge of raising the boys, and our family as a whole is closer now because of them.
Even on the roughest of days, when the twins go to bed at night, the older three linger in our bedroom sharing the cute or funny thing the twins did that day. We are bonded by a million inside jokes.
