The Gift of Learning to Read and Write: Eunice’s Story

When Eunice was 8 years old,

her father died, leaving her mother to care for four children alone. The oldest of her siblings, Eunice bore much responsibility with her mom.

It was a continual challenge for Eunice’s mother to provide food and clothing for her children, let alone to pay for their schooling. In Zambia, thousands of school-aged children never receive a formal education due to financial barriers like buying books and uniforms, or the cost of that child not being able to work to contribute to household income. Eunice spent much of her childhood working hard with her mom to ensure the family was taken care of.

But things changed in 2010 when Eunice went to live with her aunt who helped her enroll in Lifesong School. At school, Eunice learned to speak English and how to read and write. She was also taught the Gospel and learned that God loves her and has good plans for her life.

In Eunice’s words—

“We have pastors who share the Word of God with us so our lives can be transformed. When I came to school, I learned about [God]. I believed and repented and in 2018, I gave my life to God.”

At Lifesong, we stand by a 4-part pledge to the children we serve. The third part of the pledge affirms our commitment to providing quality education to orphaned and vulnerable children to provide a foundation for their future.

“Our Children” Will:

Be taught the Gospel and how to live as a follower of Jesus Christ

Not want for food, clothing, medical care, or shelter

Receive a quality education to provide a foundation for their future

Experience continued love and support while transitioning into adult living

In 2022, Eunice became the first in her family to graduate from high school.

She continued her education and spent one year in our Gap Year Program where she focused on growing in her relationship with Christ while studying sign language and food production.

Family members celebrate Eunice’s high school graduation.

Now, Eunice hopes to attend university to study law so she can advocate for people without a voice. She knows what it’s like to be vulnerable, and now she wants to give back to others in her community. She shares—

“It’s a blessing from God for me to be here. Looking at my background, I wouldn’t have reached this far if I were not here.”
