The First Christians in Their Family | An Update from Ethiopia

As young children,

Taitu* and Mehari’s* father passed away. They were left with their mother who was sick and in need of care. The siblings tried to nurse her back to health, but as children, they couldn’t take care of her, let alone themselves.

Our team in Ethiopia invited Taitu and Mehari to come to Lifesong.

There, they received holistic, Gospel-centered care and attended Lifesong school from kindergarten through 8th grade.

At last, they were free to be children without having to fend for themselves.

Later in 2023, in the wake of their mother’s passing, Taitu and Mehari accepted Jesus as their Lord and Savior.

They became the first Christians in their family.

In Ethiopia, about a third of the population is Muslim. Some of the orphaned and vulnerable children we serve come from families who are unfamiliar with the Gospel.

At Lifesong, we stand by a four-part pledge to the children we serve. The first part of the pledge affirms our commitment to teach orphaned and vulnerable children the Gospel and how to live as a follower of Jesus Christ.

“Our Children” Will:

Be taught the Gospel and how to live as a follower of Jesus Christ

Not want for food, clothing, medical care, or shelter

Receive a quality education to provide a foundation for their future

Experience continued love and support while transitioning into adult living

Taitu and Mehari’s lives are being transformed.

Through consistent love and care, they understand that they are seen, known, and loved by God. This understanding has given them the courage they need to go securely into the world with joy and purpose.

Zebdeos, a ministry leader in Ethiopia shares—

“The seeds we planted are taking root.”

Today, Taitu is in college, and Lifesong continues to support her as she chases her dreams. Mehari also continues to receive care from Lifesong. Both Taitu and Mehari continue to grow in faith.
