Independent, and Not Alone | An Update from Bolivia
Delores* and Roberto* work hard to attain skills that help them live independent lives.
As children, they were abandoned by their parents, and as is often the case, they moved from orphanage to orphanage. Finally, in 2015, they were placed in the care of our team.
At Lifesong, we stand by a 4-part pledge to the children we serve. The fourth part of the pledge affirms our commitment to providing orphaned young adults with continued love and support as they transition into adult living.
Since Delores and Roberto live with intellectual disabilities, our team made it possible for them to attend a school that teaches adaptive life skills.
Today, they are equipped to complete household chores, like cooking and shopping.
A ministry leader in Bolivia shares—
“Throughout this experience, Delores and Roberto always have the support of the team closely monitoring their progress and helping them when they faced difficulties. Their independence is our goal, and the team continues to work on strengthening their autonomy.”
One of the most significant moments in Delores’ path to independence was her participation in a job placement program. She gained meaningful work experience and improved her ability to interact with people.
In the words of teammates in Bolivia—
“Delores overcomes each adversity with perseverance, God’s support, and the support of people in her life. Over the years, she’s shown great determination and doesn’t allow these obstacles to slow down her personal and professional growth.”
Roberto has also acquired skills on the job. He completed a kitchen internship and worked as an assistant in a store, a tin shop, and an events center.
Today, Delores and Roberto share the desire to become entrepreneurs.
They recently received support from another organization to start a business selling corn. This project is an important step toward greater financial independence.
Delores and Roberto’s stories remind us that personal development cannot be achieved in isolation. With the support of people who care for them and a God Who never leaves their sides, orphaned and vulnerable children, no matter the challenges they face, can achieve amazing things and keep moving forward.
