Trusting the God Who Cares About Injustice | An Update from Guatemala

Below, our team in Guatemala shares an example of what growing in faith can look like for orphaned and vulnerable mothers and children who have suffered injustice in Guatemala—

Lidia* sat quietly in the back of the church.

Her heart was beating heavily inside her chest. She felt nothing but anger inside. Others around her closed their eyes and sang hymns, slowly swaying back and forth with their hands in the air.

“How do you trust in a God who allows bad things to happen to innocent people? she questioned. She wanted nothing to do with God and couldn’t wait for the service to end.

For several months, Lidia continued to feel this way.

She didn’t ask questions in Bible study, she kept quiet during nightly devotions, and the anger inside of her only grew. She felt alone, bitter, and misunderstood.

But one day, during a Bible lesson, someone asked a different question about injustice:

“What if God is angry too about what happened to you? What if you are here today because He cared so deeply about your injustice that He found a way for you to get to safety? And what if He sent you here to have His people care for you, grieve with you, walk with you, protect you, and teach you about His love and redemption?

That question changed something inside of Lidia.

She began to see how injustice breaks God’s heart even more than her own.

At Lifesong, we stand by a four-part pledge to the children we serve. The first part of the pledge affirms our commitment to teach orphaned and vulnerable children the Gospel and how to live as a follower of Jesus Christ. For Lidia, this meant being encouraged to wrestle through her hardest questions for God in a safe and loving space.

“Our Children” Will:

Be taught the Gospel and how to live as a follower of Jesus Christ

Not want for food, clothing, medical care, or shelter

Receive a quality education to provide a foundation for their future

Experience continued love and support while transitioning into adult living

Sin was never free; in fact, it cost God everything.

But God tells us in Deuteronomy 31:6—“Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.”

Even as good people suffer great evils, we can trust in God’s unshakable love and presence. He cares for His children more than we can imagine.
