Becoming a New Creation | An Update from Zambia

The new year brings a fresh start,

a time when people around the world form new habits, set new goals, and find renewed hope. But as children of God, we don’t need to wait for the new year to live in freedom from the past.

Orphaned and vulnerable children in Zambia recently embarked on a Vacation Bible School journey. They explored what it means to become a new creation in Christ through Bible lessons, crafts, worship, sports, and sharing a meal together. For two days, at two different campuses, the children memorized this hopeful truth from 2 Corinthians 5:17—

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.”

Above: Children learn that they are a new creation in Christ.
Top: A girl makes a butterfly craft to remind her that she is a new creation.

This verse provides a deep well of encouragement.

Many of the children our team serves have endured a difficult start to life, impacted by losing a parent, patterns of neglect or abuse, or separation from family through abandonment.

These events—at any stage in a person’s life—are devastating, but when experienced as a child, they can start to define how a child views him or herself.

However, as the children our team serves in Zambia studied and memorized 2 Corinthians 5:17, they received new hope. They were reminded that the hurtful events in their pasts, while still a part of their stories, do have an expiration date.

Children and young adults in Zambia participate in a time of devotion.

As they are renewed in Christ,

the old will pass away, and they can begin anew as a beloved child of God.

This kind of transformation is why our team stands by a four-part pledge to the children we serve. The first part of the pledge affirms our commitment to teach orphaned and vulnerable children the Gospel and how to live as a follower of Jesus Christ.

“Our Children” Will:

Be taught the Gospel and how to live as a follower of Jesus Christ

Not want for food, clothing, medical care, or shelter

Receive a quality education to provide a foundation for their future

Experience continued love and support while transitioning into adult living
