Choosing to Hope Amidst Crisis in Haiti

As the crisis in Haiti escalates,

so do our community outreach efforts at Welcome Home Haiti. Request for food, clothing, and medical assistance are making their way to our gates.

This is an opportunity for our team to continue showing God’s love through holistic care for the children and families we serve.

At Lifesong, we stand by a 4-part pledge to the children we serve. The second part of the pledge affirms our commitment to providing holistic care to orphaned and vulnerable children so they don’t lack food, clothing, medical care, and shelter.

“Our Children” Will:

Be taught the Gospel and how to live as a follower of Jesus Christ

Not want for food, clothing, medical care, or shelter

Receive a quality education to provide a foundation for their future

Experience continued love and support while transitioning into adult living

Not long ago, our team met with a single mother. She was living in one room of a neighbor’s house with her four children after running out of money trying to build her own home. One day, she came to us, asking for help with a medical emergency. Her son had fallen out of a tree and broke both of his arms, and she had no money to pay for treatment at a local hospital.

Thankfully, our team stepped in so he could receive the care he needed.

A ministry leader in Haiti shares—

“Now, more than ever, we are presented with opportunities to provide tangible aid along with the love of Christ.”

As violence continues in Haiti, Haitians are wrestling with fear and instability. Fuel is hard to come by, and on the black market, it costs roughly 10 to 20 dollars per gallon.

To protect the safety and security of our employees and their families, our team is spreading house builds over the course of a month instead of building them consecutively. This limits the number of delivery vehicles driving on dangerous roads at the same time. Employees manufacture earth blocks four days per week and continue to build four houses each month.

Gangs continue to commit horrible crimes: burning police stations, taking control of seaports, the airport, and banks, shooting at planes, taking over neighborhoods, destroying businesses and homes, and murdering many innocent people. News reports share that nearly 200,000 people have fled the capital to escape attacks.

But our ministry leaders have not given up hope.

Below, they share poetic words about Haiti in this time of strife—

Let her be known for her mangos and her avocados, her fresh pineapples, and coconuts picked right off the tree.
Let her be known for her griot and pikliz, her prestige avek chemizet, her fresh juice, and heaping plates of rice.
Let her be known for her beaches and mountains, her hospitality and vibrant colors, her tap-taps and markets, her strength and creativity.
Let her be known for her endless worship services and unspeakable joy.
Let her history ring and her resiliency sound.
Let her be free, just let her be free.
