Looking Back, Roydah Sees God’s Love
We met Roydah when she was 15 years old.
After becoming pregnant, our team welcomed her into our care. Before then, she lived with her aunt and didn’t have enough to eat. As she grieved the everyday necessities she had to live without, she began to seek comfort in a relationship and became pregnant. The father of her child refused to take responsibility, so she lost all hope.
Roydah is one of nearly 59% of adolescent girls in Zambia who have babies by age 19.
These moms are often overlooked, but through your support, you can help them find grace and love through the Gospel, finish their education, and learn to be amazing parents.
In a letter she wrote, Roydah shares—
“When I came to Kharis House, the love and care that was given is what started giving me hope for the future. It was programs like counseling, Bible study, and discipleship that started to help me develop some level of acceptance of my condition and the ability to love my child after giving birth.”
At Lifesong, we stand by a 4-part pledge to the children we serve. The third part of the pledge affirms our commitment to providing quality education to orphaned and vulnerable children to provide a foundation for their future.
Our team in Zambia empowers and equips young mothers like Roydah with various resources to help them grow into capable, well-educated individuals and mothers. Every mother receives an education as long as she is part of the program.
In addition to school, the girls participate in enrichment opportunities, including sports camps, field trips, and more.
One important element of our program is physical fitness.
Three times each week, a coach leads workouts and teaches young mothers to swim. In addition to helping them prepare for labor, physical fitness helps them build confidence and develop supportive relationships with one another. And as the girls learn to take care of their bodies and minds, they pass along good habits to their children too.
“Another big part of education and learning is through experiences,” shares a ministry leader at Kharis House.
Recently, young mothers attended a career fair.
They had the opportunity to hear from employees in various professions across the country. The girls visited agricultural shows, a power company, a water company, the military, and more.
As young mothers like Roydah have opportunities to learn and grow, God brings restoration to their lives. In Roydah’s words—
“Today, when I look back on where I came from, I can only see the love of God. My life has changed, and I can dream again.”
