Medical Care for Orphans in Uganda Teaches Us to Serve Like Jesus

Orphans in developing countries rarely have access to high-quality medical care.

This is because medical care can be expensive, often requires a significant amount of travel, may not be possible unless a legal guardian is present, and tends to be viewed as a less urgent need than food or education.

That’s why our team in Uganda at Redeemed Ministries, part of Drops of Grace, provides the children we serve with holistic, Gospel-centered care, including medical care. Our team has seen a noticeable difference in the children we serve after they receive the medical care they need.

At Lifesong, we stand by a 4-part pledge to the children we serve. The second part of the pledge affirms our commitment to providing holistic care to orphaned and vulnerable children so they don’t lack food, clothing, medical care, and shelter.

“Our Children” Will:

Be taught the Gospel and how to live as a follower of Jesus Christ

Not want for food, clothing, medical care, or shelter

Receive a quality education to provide a foundation for their future

Experience continued love and support while transitioning into adult living

Jiggers are a common medical concern in Uganda.

These sand fleas burrow into the skin of a person’s feet, causing a severe itch that makes it hard to think about anything else. This is highly distracting to a child who is trying to focus on school. If left untreated, jiggers become painful, making it difficult to walk.

Removing jiggers can be a relatively painless process if done quickly, but the longer a person waits, the more uncomfortable it will become. If jiggers aren’t removed within a few days, antibiotics are often required.

Many of the highly vulnerable children who arrived at our boarding school in February 2023 needed to have them removed. Thankfully, the children we serve can now have jiggers removed and treated by a nurse or caregiver on our team.

In addition to jiggers, our team in Uganda has provided treatments to orphaned and vulnerable children for malaria, various skin problems, and fungal infections.

A ministry leader in Uganda shares—

“Once the children had been with us for a period of time, we started to see changes in them. Before, their countenance was sad, for lack of a better word. Now, their skin is brighter, and they look healthier.”

Our team also provides orphans with a nutritious breakfast, lunch, and dinner. And children have access to multiple water filters across campus, making safe drinking water readily available to them.

Nutrition and safe drinking water make a big difference in a child’s well-being.

The orphans we serve are learning how deeply God sees, knows, and loves them.

Jesus came not to be served but to serve. He knelt to wash the feet of his disciples and asked us to do the same. Today, our team in Uganda removes jiggers from the feet of orphaned and vulnerable children. Together—because Jesus first loved us—we serve and love children who are orphaned and vulnerable.

Pray for Uganda

  • Praise God that after 2 years, the construction of a school campus has been completed. Many children will benefit from the new facilities.
  • Praise God that local churches are growing in Uganda.
  • Praise God for His provision in sending new teachers that will impact the lives of orphaned and vulnerable children. Continue to pray for more strong Christian teachers to come to our school.
  • Pray that God would provide the means to build a secondary school that will be ready for the children who are currently in primary school.
  • Pray for students as they begin the second term of the school year at the end of May.

Join our prayer team to receive monthly prayer requests & praises from across our ministry.
