God is Using Gertrude’s Life for Good

God makes beauty from ashes. And that’s what He did in Gertrude’s life. After losing both of her parents at a young age, she developed a fighting spirit that sticks with her to this day.

We are so proud of how far Gertrude has come, and we are delighted to see God using Gertrude’s unique gifts for His glory and to help people. Thank you for being a part of her story and for continuing to support her as she chases her dream of attending university.

Gertrude came face-to-face with adult-sized problems when she was just 5 years old.

Her parents passed away, and she became a double orphan who moved in with her aging grandmother in Zambia.

Though her grandmother tried to provide, Gertrude regularly went without food. Sometimes, she would find plants to cook; other times, she went without. Gertrude shares—

“I would tell my grandmother I was full, so she wouldn’t worry or be unable to sleep.”

To make matters worse, Gertrude’s grandmother was growing ill, and eventually, she couldn’t care for Gertrude at all.

That’s when Gertrude was invited to live with our team in Zambia,

where she would receive Gospel-centered, holistic care. But before accepting, she had one question: “Do the kids there fight?”

It was a surprising question for such a tiny, young girl. But the only life she had ever known was one where she had to fight physical, relational, and emotional battles to survive.

Since then, 12 years have passed. And Gertrude now shares that life is much better. She is thankful for her own clothes, a comfortable bed, nutritious food, and the opportunity to attend school. Her peers describe her as caring and kind.

In Gertrude’s words—

“Before I came to know Christ, I was sinful. I used to steal and laugh at people. I was a fighter. Then, one time, they were teaching about how much God loves us, that no matter what we do, He loves us. That message touched me, to know that no matter what I do, God still loves me.”

Gertrude accepted Jesus as her Lord and Savior, and He began healing her heart and transforming her life.

She shares—

“God is my Father. He’s always there for me. I can talk to Him.”

Today, Gertrude has big goals. She dreams of becoming an oncologist or an obstetrician and hopes to attend university when she graduates. God is using Gertrude’s life for good.
